Patriots Make it to the Pros
Greer Barnes & Alex Singer Drafted

Greer Barnes and Alex Singer have both dreamed of playing professional soccer, and now that dream has been realized. Both girls played for the Patriots 87 team coached by Steve Davis, the Patriots FC Director of Coaching, and also attended Rye High School together.

It came as no surprise to former coach Steve Davis that the two were drafted to play in the new women's professional soccer league. Steve spent many years working with the two on their individual skills outside of the team's training, and knew that both had what it took to make it to the next level. "It's a proud moment for me and my former assistant, Paul Mazzola. We spent a number of years working with the girls, and we've followed their college careers very closely. Now we'll both be looking forward to attending some of their professional games." I'm sure that all of their former Patriots teammates are very proud of them also, as the Patriots 87 team still maintain a very special bond.

Don Cupertino, president of the Patriots is also extremely proud of the accomplishments of both players, and it's opportunities like these, that prompted Don to form the Patriots organization more than 10 years ago. Don wanted to provide young girls the same opportunities that were afforded their male counterparts. Having two daughters that played soccer at a high level helped get things started, and it was then that the Patriots were formed. Looking back, it's not hard to see how the club now has two former players, and a former coach in the WPS.

Greer and Alex have seen plenty of each other with the Patriots and High School, but they also saw each other quite a bit during their college careers. Greer, who attended West Virginia University, and Alex, who attended the University of Virginia, played against each other plenty of times in the NCAA regular season, as well as the NCAA Division I Soccer Tournament.

It's no surprise then, that the trend will continue when the two will face off in the inuagural game of the new Women's Professional League (WPS) on March 29th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.  Greer was drafted by the Los Angeles Sol, and Alex by the Washington Freedom.

Greer will join FIFA World player of the year, Marta. She joins a potent Sol team that will be sure to captivate soccer fans throughout the Southland and already features three U.S. Women’s National Team players (Shannon Boxx, Aly Wagner, Stephanie Cox) and a host of others with significant international experience. It's an exciting time for the Sol, as it was recently announced that Marta was voted FIFA World Female Player of the Year for the third year in a row.

Alex will play alongside Rebecca Moros of Mamaroneck. Rebecca also played for Steve Davis in her early years, before she went to play for the HBC Fury on Long Island. Alex will join such players as former US National team captain, Cat Whitehill, US National team striker, Abby Wambach, and former US National team goalkeeper, Briana Scurry. PLaying for the Freedom will not be a new experience for Alex, who won a W-League National Championship with the team whilst they were still playing in the amateur league.

The two of them will be joined in the WPS by former Patriots coach, Emma Hayes. Emma is the head coach of the Chicago Red Stars, who will be competing in the league. We wish all of them the very best.
